ABOUT TURKISH FOLK CULTURE AND DANCES

Turkish Folk Dances 

Folk dances have different characteristics based on region and location and are generally engaged in during weddings, journeys to the mountains in the summer, when sending sons off to military service and during religious and national holidays. The best known folk dances are:

Horon

This Black Sea dance is performed by men only, dressed in black with silver trimmings. The dancers link arms and quiver to the vibrations of the kemence, a primitive type of violin. For more info CLICK HERE

Kasik Oyunu

The Spoon Dance is performed from Konya to Silifke and consists of gaily dressed male and female dancers clicking out the dance rhythm with a pair of wooden spoons in each hand.

Kilic Kalkan

The Sword and Shield Dance of Bursa represents the Ottoman conquest of the city. It is performed by men only, dressed in early Ottoman battle dress, who dance to the sound of clashing swords and shields without music. 

Zeybek

In this Aegean dance, colorfully dressed male dancers, called "Efe", symbolize courage and heroism.

Turkish Folk Music

The lively Turkish folk music, which originated on the steppes of Asia, is in complete contrast to the refined Turkish classical music of the Ottoman court. Until recently, folk music was not written down, and the traditions have been kept alive by the 'asiklar', or Turkish troubadours. Distinct from Turkish folk music is Ottoman military music, now performed by the 'mehter takimi' (Janissary Band) in Istanbul, which originated in Central Asia, and is played with kettle drums, clarinets, cymbals and bells. The mystical music of the Whirling Dervishes is dominated by the haunting sound of the reed pipe or 'ney', and can be heard in Konya during the Mevlana Festival in December.

WHAT CAN WE DO ON HOLIDAY IN ANTALYA?

Antalya, the Pearl of the Mediterranean as if a paradise on the Earth!



Turkey's fastest growing city, Antalya is blessed with an ideal climate (except during the searing heat of July and August) and a stunning setting atop a limestone plateau, with the formidable Beydağları looming to the west. In the heart of town, the pretty yacht harbour huddles below the Roman walls, while behind the new buildings the crescent of Konyaaltı bay curves to the industrial harbour 10km west of town. Despite the sometimes grim appearance of its concrete sprawl, Antalya is an agreeable enough city to live in, but the main area of interest for outsiders is confined to the relatively tiny and central old quarter within the Roman walls, known as the Kaleiçi (or "within the castle"). Three or four days in town – including half-day excursions to the nearby ruins of Termessos, Perge and Aspendos – should be sufficient.
You can make a time journey towards the depth of history by visiting the very rich historical heritage and also rest and relax in the  lab of the magical  natural beauties here in a peace of mind.
Due to the fact that Antalya is a real tourist center, there is a great infrastructue, many restaurants, shops, disco's etc. There is no need to get bored here. The old harbour is also the place for many open air events and concerts during the summer.

Thera are many excellent daytrips to be made in and around Antalya. The ancient sites of Aspendos,  Perge, Phaselis, Manavgat, Side and Termessos are all within a distance of 50 kilometers. Aspendos ampytheatre is the largest and better shaped of its kind. Every summers music festivals are being hold in the area, it has capasity of more than 20,000 people.
West of Antalya is called  Kemer where the mountain is more than 1500m high subparallel to the narrow shore line. The east of Antalya  has the best beaches and  the shore line is very wide. Make sure you visit Manavgat water falls while in the area.
